about

This song grew out of a sticker I started noticing on especially older pumps at some gas stations reading (believe it or not!), "Do Not Siphon by Mouth". To my amazement, I then came across a newspaper article from some time ago conveying a local public health department warning against siphoning gas pumps by mouth. Why all the warnings? Enough people had tried siphoning gas pumps orally and probably paid heavily for it. To me, these added up to more than mere public health warnings; they were odes to human stupidity, abundantly worthy of song. The vocals are deliberately in the slightly debauched, bluesy/boozy styles of Don VanVliet of Captain Beefheart fame, Johnny "Guitar" Watson (a la Zappa's "San Ber'dino" and whispered hints at Tom Waits. The blues-rock intro the song is then followed by a psychedelic sound-collage of some of dumbest things ever said by people who should have known better (Bill Clinton: "I did not have sexual relations with that woman ...". George W. Bush: "It's going to take time to restore chaos" ... "I can imagine someone like Osama Bin Laden appreciating the joy of Hanuka..."), punctuated by a faux Englishman saying "Well, yeah I would. But it says 'Do Not Siphon by Mouth.'" The music from the second part of the song is deliberately eerie and sometimes disjointed to capture stupidity as the theme but, if you squint and think really hard, you might still be able to dance to it.

lyrics

I'm picking up bad vibrations
Sad tidings through my tinfoil hat
Must be some bad hat reception
Heard a message but it can't mean *that*
Discordant dissociation
Tank's empty, pump's a-runnin' out
Ain't got so much edgy-kay-shun
But, I learned the hard way
"Do not siphon by mouth..."
